Does this sound familiar?

  • Have you ever gotten stuck when facing obsessions, dealing with strong urges to do a compulsion and not knowing what to do?
  • Do you feel overwhelmed when hearing that to get unstuck from OCD you have to “face all obsessions”?
  • Are you afraid that facing your obsessions will prove that something is wrong, immoral, and unscrupulous with you?
  • Is your career affected because of sticky thoughts?
  • Have you tried to start a hobby but you discontinue it because of intrusive thoughts?
  • Are you worried about being asked to do exposures that are against your values and inconsistent with who you are?
  • Have you tried to enjoy a TV show and it gets difficult because of sticky thoughts?
  • Are you concerned that your relationships are affected because of doubtful obsessions that are hard to let go?
  • Are you afraid that if you do exposure exercises something bad will happen to you or your loved ones?
  • Are you taking your obsessions as the absolute truth?
  • Is your life restricted?
  • Are you living in your head?
  • Are you disconnected from what matters to you?

Tackling OCD is not easy

The frontline treatment for OCD and any form of anxiety is called Exposure, and while exposure is an effective, research-based, and well-established approach, it’s also hard work because:
  • You have to learn about the different types of exposure exercises
  • You have to face all those obsessions that keep you stuck which can feel overwhelming
  • You will get stuck with compulsions
  • You may get confused not knowing if you are doing a compulsion or if that’s a regular behavior that is not attached to OCD
  • You will have to motivate yourself to approach exposure exercises
  • You may struggle distinguishing different forms of mental compulsions
  • You will worry about not doing exposures right
  • You may get frustrated when your brain latches onto other obsessions or compulsions
  • You will have to do all those exposure exercises (and a lot more) while juggling other areas of your life – job, school, relationships, health, and religion.
  • You may feel hopeless and alone
Tackling OCD and anxiety is hard work. It takes a lot of patience, commitment, and willingness. But it’s also genuinely life-changing and it doesn’t need to be robotic, mechanic, or rigid.

There is a way out...

  • Instead of spending hours in your head holding with white knuckles on to the thought “it’s too much, I can’t handle it” you learn skills to face all those overwhelming obsessions that come with sticky obsessions one-by-one?

  • And if instead of spending all your energy managing your obsessions, wrestling with those feelings, and dwelling on whether you can handle them or not, you put all that energy into handling those troublesome moments and do the stuff that truly matters to you.

  • Imagine if you learn to ride the waves of overwhelming fears that come with obsessions without sinking?

I’m not saying that facing your obsessions will be easy peasy, but I’m saying that once you learn ACT & ERP skills to handle any annoying feeling that comes along with intrusive thoughts, you will stop making fear-based decisions.

If there’s one real “secret” it’s that you want to learn skills to live the life you want to live and be the person you want to be.

You can learn to approach exposures in the service of your personal values without spending a lot of time, energy, and mental effort on compulsive and avoidant behaviors that keep you stuck.

Instead of thinking of exposures as the end goal, you want to think of exposures as the means to living a rich, meaningful, and purposeful life.

This is a new way of getting unstuck from OCD!

About Dr. Z

My name is Patricia E. Zurita Ona, and because I have a long name, my clients call me Dr. Z.

I’m a licensed clinical psychologist in California, with undergraduate and doctoral specialized training in empirically supported treatments based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and in particular, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

When I say “specialized training” I mean exactly that!

My work is dedicated to helping all my clients to get “unstuck from ineffective playing-it-safe moves and anxiety-based reactions” so they can live the life they want to live.

I have significant experience - over 18 years - working with individuals dealing with fear-based struggles such as perfectionism, procrastination, uncertainty, decision-making, phobias, OCD, panic, and any other anxiety-related difficulties.

I'm the founder of the East Bay Behavior Therapy Center, a boutique therapy practice, where she offers therapy, coaching, and focused interventions based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and contextual-behavioral science.

I'm the author of 6 books, co-author of two, and have been nominated as a Fellow of the Association of Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS) for my contributions to the dissemination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to the treatment of particular unworkable behavioral patterns.

Dr. Z's thoughts on exposure

I have been trained in all models of exposure therapy: habituation model, inhibitory learning model, and ACT & ERP.

In addition to my doctoral training, I'm a  graduate of the International OCD Foundation Behavior Therapy Training Institute (BTTI) for the treatment of pediatric OCD and adult OCD; my clinical work is primarily based on Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the recognized front-line treatment for OCD, anxiety and related condition disorders. I completed a 10-day intensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

In my practice as a full-time therapist – and I mean it, when I say full-time therapist – I have witnessed firsthand all the struggles that come with facing our fears, worries, obsessions, and anxieties. It’s not easy work.

I have seen clients that responded well to traditional models of exposure therapy and I have seen clients that got stuck and felt discouraged about the possibility of getting better. In my work as a clinician, it’s very clear that tackling OCD is hard work and is possible; but when thinking of exposure to all those intrusive thoughts that keep you stuck, one size of exposure doesn’t fit all.

I have delivered ACT & ERP in individual sessions, compact treatments (3-4 times a week), and intensive treatments (15-hrs a week). Over the years I have seen that the combination of ACT & ERP skills is long-lasting life skills, prepares you to face any obsession-related struggles that come your way, helps you to develop a new mindset, and offer you a compassionate, research-based, and actionable approach to live the life you want to live.

Yes, I want to tackle OCD!

Frequently Asked Questions

I have OCD and other mental health struggles, would the class be helpful to me?
ACT beyond OCD is an online class designed to provide you with all the ACT and ERP skills you need to tackle OCD episodes. The class doesn’t focus on any other specific problem like depression, trauma, social anxiety, emotion regulation, or others. However, the key ACT principles are applicable to other mental health struggles and you can find them helpful as well; it just happens that this class tackles OCD only.

Can I take the class instead of doing therapy?
ACT beyond OCD is first and foremost an educational research and skills-based online class designed to teach you ACT + ERP skills to live your life, make the best of it, and stop getting stuck with OCD episodes. As helpful as it can be, this online class is an addition to therapy but not a replacement for it or any treatment program.

Who is this online class for?
This is an ideal class if you: (a) want to augment your Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) skills, (b) have been recently diagnosed with OCD, (c) have received treatment previously and are in recovery, but want a refresher of ERP skills, (d) didn’t relate to exposure-based treatments before.

I’m in therapy right now, can I take this online class?
If you’re currently in therapy focused in OCD and are looking for resources that are interactive and engaging to expand what you’re learning in therapy, the skills covered in this online class will help.

If your therapist is familiar with ACT, much better. If your therapist is not familiar with ACT but is familiar with ERP, please refer them to the website and invite them to send us any questions they may have. It’s important to clarify that this online class blends ACT + ERP skills together.

Is this online class based on Dr. Z’s workbooks?
ACT beyond OCD is based on Dr. Z’s book “Living beyond OCD” but is much different since it’s experiential, interactive, and community-based. You will dive deeper into the “hows” of putting ACT & ERP skills into action.

What's the schedule and is there a time frame to complete the class?
ACT beyond OCD Home Study is a self-paced online course in which you will have access to all materials for 2 months from the time of purchase.

For how long do I have access to the class?
While the class is designed for 8 weeks, you will have access to all materials, resources, and handouts for the class for 2-months. So, you can pause, fast-forward, and re-watch the videos as many times as you would like.

Is there a group discussion?
When enrolling in the class, you also get access to our private group where you can post your questions, comments, and other relevant resources at any time.

Can I go back to the modules I already completed?
Yes. You have access to all the materials for 2-months and after completing a module, you can go back to it any time you want.

Can I share the class?
ACT beyond OCD is designed to be taken individually and not for group purposes. While you don’t need to keep your class a secret, we ask you to not copy or redistribute the materials in any way.

What happens after I finish the class?
